This was Northrop's first try at the Flying Wing.
I was talking to Karen Graham Kuehl HHS59 and she'd mentioned that her father had worked for Northrop and had worked on the Flying Wing. We decided that it might make an interesting web page, so here it is.
These pictures are one's that my father had of the first wing. My father, John, and his brother Louie Baker both went to work for Northrop aircraft in 1939. My Uncle was one of the crew that laid all the wiring in this first try at a tailless aircraft. My father was a machinist at the time. Actually there are two aircraft pictured. The prop version and, as we entered the jet age, the jet version. These pictures were taken in the late 40's. There were earlier, smaller versions of these two planes. One of them, the N9M, is still flying at airshows. These however were destroyed. |
