Message: John, back in the mid to late 60's a group of us used to play baseball at York Street School. We were 11,12 years old. Rocky Thomas, Bob Hurley, Gene Skulick, Bob Rutherford, Danny Webster, Mike Raele, were a few of the names I recall. You said you lived on Freeman. We hung out at the house by the alley just north of 120th Street on Freeman. There was a guy, Stewart, I think was his name, that lived on the corner of 119th and Freeman. Any recollection of this guy. He was always doing something off the wall. Enza, are you going to be glued to the Big screen this weekend? The Laker girls er Lakers are on. Jim, I'll be cruisen the strand this Sunday. Thought I'd warn you. Cougs have a great weekend.
Hey Wade, I didn't live on Freeman. My folks were divorced and dad's house was just south of 119th on Freeman on the east side. I lived on Cedar between 122nd and Broadway. Don't remember any Stewart, but the SW corner of Freeman and 119th was another Baker family; Gordon Baker HHS59? and his brother. On the NE corner of 119th and Freeman was the Jolly family. Sue Jolly HHS61; Ted Jolly HHS69; etc. On the SE corner were the Godfrieds; Curtis, Monique, and Yvette. They all went to HHS in the late 70's to early 80's.
Dad had a white 1962 Chevy 409 that he sold to a kid that lived by the alley you're speaking of. The car was parked there for years. Do you remember it? BTW, my dad knew your dad from way back. Hawthorne Volunteer Fire Dept. from the mid 40's. I have a picture of all of them in front of the old fire house on Plaza Square. Have to do some digging for that one.

I saw him a few years ago in concert at Universal. The music was pretty good, but he looked nothing like expected. Try to imagine Truman Capote dressed like Dick Tracy, honestly.

Message: I visited the campus in '96 and several of the teachers I had were still there. Mr. T said that the fence was built to keep the bad elements out. He said something about an african-american principal being fired by the school board and then the next day there was a near-riot when a bunch of Leuzinger students marched over to HHS to stir up trouble (sort of makes you wonder why it was outsiders and not the HHS students?) It had happened several years earlier. Anyway, I had fun seeing some of my old teachers - in addition to Mr. T, I remember seeing Mr. Macha (the favorite teacher of many cougars), Mrs. Atkins, and Mr. Caldwell. Mr. T walked with me across campus to show me where Mr. Macha's room was - it was in a temporary double trailer sandwiched between two of the buildings on the northeast side of the campus. The big issue being discussed in the Cougar that week was a new dress code regulation requiring pants to be no more than 2 sizes larger than the person's actual size.
I had Mr Caldwell for math his first year at HHS. I guess times AND students have changed.

Message: Enza, The Laker Girls are what everyone goes to the Staples Center to see for the first three quarters of a B-Ball game. The last five minutes of the game are the real game. Where does Shaq get off saying he's the sheriff, er police, and the Kings better watch out? Read in the Times today about Kobe's meeting with the young man from San Antonio. Great article. Refreshing to read about an athlete being human and not a primadonna. HHS has those kind of athletes, genuine. Mike Scott was that way with fans. Always gave them an autograph and spent time talking to them. Mark Lee was the same way. Ron Mix would spend time with fans and if you said you were from Hawthorne you'd be there for hours. What is the feeling of the alumni on the changes that have taken place at HHS? The big fence seems to have taken away the focus of education and the freedom to students it once had. HHS was admired and respected by other schools, because it didn't have a fence holding students in. Does the alumni continue to follow HHS and it progress? Feedback Topic for today. Have a great day.
I was told "the fence" is there to keep the bad element OFF campus, but it would sure keep Mike Shay and me from getting to Frostys during 3rd period auto shop, too.

Message: The candlelight vigil at the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial was great Monday night. Tom Ridge was there and all the speakers were good, but the best part was probably at the beginning when a double rainbow formed to the east and everybody was turning around to take pictures of it. BTW - I agree with Wade's reminder - we also have a lot of cougars out there serving as firefighters. On another subject, it's great to hear cougs talk about So. Cal. beaches. I returned Sunday from a week in Florida and their's aren't near as good as So. Cal. beaches. Little shore-lapping waves - I've seen bigger on Lake Michigan. The diving was good, but even there I'll take underwater California over Florida any day (o.k., I'm biased). About the Lakers - I have a hard time getting excited about Kobe - he throws up a lot of bricks and you look at the stats after the game and he's shot 10 for 27. Not near as good as Jerry and Elgin used to do.

Message: A while ago when we were talking about HHS's greatest athletes, someone suggested that we mention those who have made real contributions to society. On this day of the candlelight ceremony at the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial here in Washington D.C., let's say thanks to those HHS alums who have been putting their lives on the line for us every day as law enforcement officers. From various classes in the 70's and 80's, I can think of L_, John, Bill, John, Mar_ (you folks know who you are!) and I'm sure there's others. I'm hoping to go tonight to the ceremony with my buddy Sam Knight (who went to Hawthorne Lutheran and is out here on one of those multi-state memorial bike rides) and it's probably going to be a real tear jerker, since we lost so many officers at the WTC on 9/11.
Great Idea.... thanks Tim.

Message: Hello Dave and Kim, Pat and I were at the River Run also. We ride out every year and always have a lot of fun. This year seemed like any other. As usual we worked on the bike for several weeks getting ready. New tires, new chrome, and we spent 3 hours Tuesday night putting the final touch ups and cleaning to my bike, a 2000 Softail. Pat has a 97 Custom Sportster. We took off together on my Bike around 9:00am Wed. morning. The T-bag loaded with 2 T-shirts and an extra pair of levis for me and about 100lbs of Pat's stuff. Well all our cleaning was in vain. It started raining just as we took off. We were wet within the first 2 miles. Then I noticed red flashing lights in my left mirror. We had gone about 3 miles. We were stopped in Corona and ticketed by a CHP on a Bike for loud pipes. We took it with a grain of salt and continued on to meet our friends. The rest of the trip out was good. The rain had stopped by the time we reached the Cajon Pass. We didn't hear about the shooting until Sat. morning. It's really a shame that people with no consideration of others safety can make all bikers look bad. We made our usual ride to Oatman on Sat. afternoon, and the police were everywhere. We didn't think much more of the shooting, we were partied out and went to bed early. Traffic did suck on the way home Sunday, it didn't help that the big race event was scheduled again in Vegas for the same weekend, just like it was last year. We live in Anaheim Hills. If either of you or any other Coug's want to ride let us know. We really enjoy riding. We like the charity runs very much also. Four corners is next on our agenda.
